An individual in default may also be subject to withdrawal from
school. If the student is withdrawn, the account will be referred
to a collection agency and reported to a credit bureau.
If a check or e-check payment is returned by the bank because of insufficient funds or a closed account, the returned check, along with a $25 returned check fee, will be charged to the issuer’s student account (or to the account of the student on whose behalf the original check payment was presented).
The student will receive an e-mail notification regarding the returned check. The e-mail will include instructions to pay the returned check and service fee within 15 business days. Payment may be by cash, bank wire, certified check or money order. Cash payments should be made in University Cashiering (705 Broad Street, suite 201).
The $25.00 returned check is assessed for each returned check and is assessed regardless of the amount of each returned check.
If an account indicates a history of returned checks, the University may suspend a student’s check writing privileges. Returned checks that remain unpaid and cases of multiple returned checks may be referred to the student’s dean, to the appropriate judicial board, and to the Duke University Police Department for further action.
As a reminder, Duke University does not accept post dated checks.
